Attendance Policy
School

In order for a student to progress satisfactorily in school, it is essential that a student attend school regularly. Regular attendance promotes discipline, proper learning habits, good character and excellence. In keeping with these ideals, the following is the attendance policy of the Danville Christian Academy.

  • If a student is absent more than 20 days of school, his/her promotion to a higher grade could be in doubt. A committee of his/her teacher, the headmaster and one board member shall determine the promotion.
  •

  • Students with an excused absence will be allowed to make up their work. Assignments will be made up in a certain length of time – the number of days absent plus one. Therefore, if a student misses two days, he/she will have three days to get his/her work turned in to the teacher or else a “zero” will be given to any work not made up.
  •

  • Students with unexcused absences will be required to make up their work in the same time framework but their class average will be cut 1% for each unexcused absence during the nine weeks period. The student will start each nine weeks period with no unexcused absences.
  •

  • A student will receive a one-half day absence if he/she enters the classroom after 10:00 a.m. or leaves the classroom before 1:00 p.m.
  •

  • Examples of excused absences:
    • Personal illness, injury, or doctor appointments, which cannot be made after school
    • Death in the family
    • A family emergency
    • A marriage in the immediate family - An immediate family member shall be a parent, a sibling, or a grandparent.
    • Participation in school activities during the school day
    • Educational trips of five school days or less - These trips are to be validated ahead of time by the Headmaster. Any homework is to be picked up before the trip.
  • Some examples of unexcused absences are shopping, out late the night before, tiredness, haircuts, baby sitting, needed at home, etc….Missing school with parental consent but no prior approval by the school will also be considered unexcused.
  •

  • In order for students to participate in cocurricular events, the student must be in attendance the entire day of the activity. An exception may be made by the Headmaster for scheduled appointments.
  •

  • Procedures to follow when absent from school. (Excused or Unexcused)
    • Each student shall have a written excuse by his/her parents or guardian upon returning to school. This excuse shall have on it the name of the student, date, dates absent and the reason for the absence.
    • The note shall be given to the homeroom teacher who in turn will give it to the Headmaster. Any final decision as to whether an absence is excused or unexcused is left up to the Headmaster.
    • Parents or guardians should try to pick up any work missed by a student if he/she will be absent for two days or more. It is not necessary to do this for one day.
    • If a student misses five school days or more in a row, a doctor’s written excuse shall be required upon the student’s return to school.
  • Families who take vacations during the school year when school is in session put their children at a disadvantage in their class. The Danville Christian Academy strongly recommends that vacations be scheduled at Fall, Christmas, or
  • Spring Breaks when school is not in session.

  • Tardiness. It is important that students always be on time to school and to class. By being prompt, the student is demonstrating self-discipline and responsibility.
    • A student is considered tardy when he/she enters the classroom before 10:00 a.m. or leaves the classroom after 1:00 p.m.
    • If a student is tardy it will be recorded by the teacher and forwarded to the office.
    • Three times tardy may be counted as one unexcused absence thereby lowering the student’s class average by 1%. Each nine
weeks the student will start out with no tardies on their record.
    • If six tardies are accumulated in one nine weeks, a conference with the Headmaster and parents may be requested. Anyone who is habitually tardy may be asked to withdraw from the school.
