Curriculum

Curriculum has been adopted for all courses at DCA. Changes in curriculum require approval from the Headmaster. Informal review of curriculum is an on-going process. The formal process for curriculum review is currently under revision. All questions concerning curriculum should be addressed to the Headmaster.

Supervision

Research shows that adult supervision is the most effective way in keeping students safe. It is the classroom teacher’s responsibility to supervise their students at all times. At no time should students be unsupervised. In addition, employees of Danville Christian Academy have the authority and the obligation to be alert to stop and report any conduct on the part of students or visitors to the campus which is counter to the rules of the school; represents a danger to them or any other person; or represents a danger to property which belongs to the school or which is on the school grounds. Also, staff members will be assigned specific supervisory responsibilities during the school year.

Care of Room and Equipment

Each teacher or staff member is responsible for the care of building facilities and equipment during the periods he/she is assigned to it. Under no circumstances should students be permitted to leave a room in a cluttered condition, or should students be left unattended in a classroom. It is the responsibility of the last teacher using the room each day to see that the room is in order before leaving.

Parent / Teacher Conferences

The Parent-Teacher Conference is the means of communication with the home. Teachers should be available each day after school unless other assigned duties prevent such availability. Teachers should also make themselves available at other times when necessary to meet with a parent. It is the teacher's responsibility to keep a parent informed when a student is having a problem with academics or discipline. By working with the home, serious problems in both areas may be avoided. Teachers are encouraged to meet with the parents of each student at least once a year. In addition, occasional phone calls and personal notes to parents are very helpful in the communication process.

Lesson Plans

All teachers are expected to prepare daily lesson plans and have them readily accessible for the Headmaster to review. Specific procedures for assignment sheets and weekly lesson plans will be given by the Headmaster at the beginning of the school year; however, it is expected that all teachers will post a weekly assignment sheet in an effort to communicate upcoming assignments, tests, quizzes, and areas of study to students and parents.

Record Keeping

All student records will be maintained in strict confidentiality by the teacher and made accessible to only those working with the student. At the end of each school year, all records shall be turned into the Assistant Headmaster who will retain said records for a period of five years.

Report Cards
Report Cards will be distributed at the end of each nine-week period. Mid-term reports will also be sent home at the halfway point of the grading period.

Grades
Each teacher is responsible for collecting grades and recording them in their classroom grade books. These books contain space to record information from the school calendar, seating charts, and recording of grades. All classroom grade books are the property of DCA and must be neat, accurate and up-to-date.

Classroom Attendance
Keeping an accurate and detailed record of ALL absences and tardies is a MUST for the protection of students, teachers and the school. Attendance sheets are to be marked daily and sent to the office. All teachers should be diligent in marking classroom books when a student misses a class. Teachers can discourage lateness to class by starting on time and having a reputation for being punctual in beginning instruction.

Cumulative Records
Cumulative folders are kept on all students attending DCA. These folders may be examined on a need basis. Teachers may use them in the office area or in their rooms. They must never be left out overnight nor leave the school grounds. They are also confidential. Teachers are responsible for keeping their students' permanent records up-to-date. At the conclusion of the school year, each teacher must record the necessary information on the cumulative records and return these records to the Assistant Headmaster.

Homework

Danville Christian Academy believes that homework plays an important role in the education of each child. Academic reasons for homework include providing practice in needed skill areas and reinforcing concepts presented in class. Homework also promotes responsibility, as well as helping a student learn good work habits and how to budget his or her time.

Homework shall be assigned by teachers according to the abilities and needs of the students. Our homework requirements are balanced, not oppressive.

Substitutes

Qualified substitutes shall be employed and assigned to minimize the disruption to school operations if regularly employed certificated personnel are absent. Teachers shall keep attendance records, seating charts, grade book, substitute information packet, and lesson plans so that a substitute teacher can take over classes with a minimum of confusion. Lesson plans shall be sufficiently complete to give an overview of the subject as well as progress being made in each class. Lesson plans shall be prepared one week in advance. Substitute teachers shall carry the same responsibilities as the regular teacher and shall remain on assignment until released by the Headmaster.

Hours of Duty

The teacher is expected to be in the classroom on time and to remain with his or her students throughout the entire day or assigned period. Emergency situations may occur making tardiness or temporary absence necessary. These occasions should rarely occur and the office should be notified immediately. Teachers should also notify the administrator/office staff of any need to leave school grounds during the school day.

Appearance and Professionalism

All employees are expected to maintain a level of professionalism becoming to the position they hold. Faculty members are to maintain their classrooms in a manner that is neat, organized, and conducive to learning. All employees must maintain a professional appearance in dress and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Attendance

An employee’s regular attendance on the job is important to the school’s operation. Frequent or unexplained absence from work or tardiness in reporting to work will seriously impair the value of the employee’s services to the school and will be sufficient cause for termination or other disciplinary action.
Remember, we cannot be successful without you.

Cell Phones

Each teacher is expected to protect the instructional time of the school day. It is important that cell phone calls not be made during instructional or supervisory time. Cell phones should also be silenced during instructional time, meetings, and conferences.
